Should I Quit My Job Before I Start My Digital Marketing Business?

Hey guys. In this video, I want to talk to you about, should you quit your job to start your digital marketing agency full time?

My short answer is, absolutely not. You’re way better off keeping your steady job and your steady paycheck and working, as Gary V. says, on the side hustle. I’ve done this for four companies, now, and I can speak from experience that it makes building your business so much easier. You’re able to invest for the long term. You’re not thinking about what’s the quickest dollar you can make so you can pull it out so that you can survive. And that allows you to take a much more strategic view point in growing your business. Ultimately, it allows you to scale your businesses faster.

So the first business I grew, I invested $2,500 with a business partner. We both had full time jobs. We did this at night and on weekends. We were able to produce 1.2 million in our first year. At the end of the first year, we both still had jobs. I actually jumped in full time at the end of our first year. My business partner stayed full time at his job until after we were doing three million dollars a year in revenue. And just in case you’re thinking, “Okay. Well, maybe they weren’t profitable.” We were very profitable. But it just made sense. All of our dollars were being reinvested into the business, which allowed us to scale that much more. We didn’t have to worry about taking out a paycheck. We didn’t have to worry about making short term decisions. We were able to take all of the money we were making, redeploy it in the business, and scale it up.

Fast forward a couple years. I sold that business. I started another business, and I started that business while I was still working in the first business. And when it got to the point where it became interesting and it looked like, “Hey, this was about to take off,” I sold the first company, jumped into the second company full time, worked at the second company for 12 months before selling it to a public company. But once again, I wasn’t dependent on a paycheck, so it allowed me to focus on the strategic vision of scaling the business, and ultimately selling it. Again, now I’m working at that company, I started my marketing business again on the side, grew it to the point where it made sense. Ultimately, I ended up staying with that company for a number of years. But when I left, I had a full time income waiting for me in a digital marketing agency that I built as a side hustle.

Ultimately, one of the nice things about building a digital marketing agency is, you’re not actually required to be at an office, nor do your customers expect to see you on a daily basis. Sure, you need to be able to answer emails and probably take the occasional phone call, but if you set it up properly, that’s really not a problem to do while you’re at work. So what I would encourage you to do is start small. Look at what you need to replace your current lifestyle, and don’t jump in full time, thinking, “Hey, this is going to allow me to scale up my business quicker,” because ultimately what it’s going to do is put a noose around your neck. You have to be able to create money, so you have to make short term decisions, so that you’re able to pull out the cash flow so you can live. You’re way better off at the 9 to 5 job, where you’re able to take your paycheck and not worry about that short term cash flow.
